Who are Tesco?

Tesco needs no introduction. The brand is iconic, towering above competitors as the market leader of groceries in the UK and the third-largest retailer in the world. Their mission is to cater to their customers by providing them with sustainable products – whether that be food or fashion – that never compromise on quality.

What did they need?

Tesco were on the hunt for two customer analytics managers, who would help the brand make decisions with the consumer always in mind. Their key role would be developing a deep and comprehensive understanding of who their customers are, finding out what makes them tick. A customer analytics manager would be responsible for developing insights in order to comprehend how Tesco can encourage customers to keep buying with them; Tesco place a particular emphasis on building long-term relationships with their consumers. The role would entail looking at data derived from the loyalty Tesco club card (which we all know and love). Their research would revolve around high-value customers; prospective candidates would need to be able to use their expertise to leverage data to encourage repeat business.

Given the current state of the market, filling these roles proved to be no easy feat for Tesco on their own. It’s a candidate-driven market, and with salaries being pushed up and many companies hiring at the moment, it can be hard to break through the noise and reach the right people at the right time. These candidates needed to fit a specific brief: they would need experience communicating with senior stakeholders; be able to understand stakeholder briefs; have the ability to carry out hands-on analysis efficiently and effectively using SQL, and present back compelling stories to business leaders and stakeholders across the business.

How did Nicholson Glover help?

Tesco turned to Nicholson Glover to support them in the task of filling these two roles. One of the consultants on our team, Will Cuthell, was the main consultant working on this account, and going into it, he states that he was ‘particularly keen’ to fill both vacancies as the roles sounded ‘genuinely exciting’ for candidates. The opportunity for career progression as part of a well-known brand was a real draw that made the role an interesting one to present to candidates. Will made a consistent effort to stay close to both the client and prospective candidates to ensure engagement levels and momentum remained high throughout the hiring process.

Through a combination of job postings, going through the candidate pool on our database, and doing extensive, tireless and discerning searches on LinkedIn to find candidates that met the client brief, Will was able to put forward a number of great candidates for Tesco to choose from. About 10 CVs were sent, 4 candidates made it to interview, and both roles were ultimately filled in just three months.
